Ghazni...The Fallen Retreat!!!

 Preface: Once upon a time!!!

        There ruled a Sultan...

Who writ his Kingdom in the pages of history...

By the deeds of his posterity...

        Hail to Thee!!!

        Hail to Thee!!!

The Poem:

"Suzerain Ghazni,

 ruthless Ghazni!"

...The last thing he could have remembered.

Innocent love that fell prey at the devil's knee,

...The last thing she could have whispered.

 The barbarian King of Ghazni,

 Demolished love and reaped hatred-

He survived in his repeated attempts many,

Thirsty for his lethal blood and his mission was sacred.

Welcome to the conquered city of Ghazni!

Hammered heads and decomposed love yelling-

His pulse racing fists and tethered agony,

Mahmud is cursed to die while mischievous retreating.

Then came the battle of Ghazni-

The triumphed Baron, and the fall of Ghazni!

...The last thing she could have wanted.

...The last thing he could have granted.

Synopsis:

There is a very famous saying that, " A Kingdom is rather blessed or cursed by the ruler". Then welcome to the often heard city of Ghazni in the pages of history, reddened by the suzerain Mahmud, the culminating and the first ruler of the dynasty. Mahmud with his ubiquitous scepter spread mammoth and cruelty for his dubious cause. My first historical poetic attempt captures the attention of its readers into the Afghan city of Ghazni that is more often remembered for Mahmud or his deeds, the torments that Mahmud catered in the world saga.

A zealous Sunni Moslem, he plundered wealthy India and used the booty to patronize culture in Ghazni, making it the center of Perso-Islamic civilization. Between 1000 and 1026 AD he mounted atleast 17 raids against India with the aim of extirpating idol-worshipping Hindu infidels and destroying Hindu temples, which were great repositories of wealth. His most important expedition was against the temple of Somnath in 1025 AD.

As far as this poetry is concerned it is dedicated to the city of Ghazni in the richest of the literal style, because very few have done this and that the city burdened by such a ruler needs a corner of sympathetic attention. Indeed Mahmud had links with poetry. As a patron of the arts, Mahmud attracted poets from all parts of Asia, and perhaps the most famous of them all, was Firdausi. Firdausi's Shahnama has placed Mahmud among the immortals of history. Fanatical, cruel, fickle, and un-certain in temper, Mahmud was extremely greedy of wealth. He refused to pay the 60,000 goldpieces he had promised Firdausi for his work, making the poet so bitter that he wrote a satire about the Sultan.

Why then the title Ghazni and not Mahmud???...Well history knows him as the Mahmud of Ghazni and if I only refer Mahmud, nobody can identify him. He spoiled his kingdom name with him and Ghazni became synonymously spelt as terror. I have personified the city of Ghazni in a feminine format that has been oppressed in the history. The repeated attempts by him raged destructor Lord Shiva and the devil Mahmud recieved fatal end.

Finally, the poem concludes with the modern historical "Battle of Ghazni", that took place in July 23, 1839 during the first Anglo-Afghan war. The city of Ghazni was defeated by the British troops and General Keane was, for his service, elevated to the Peerage as Baron Keane of Ghazni. Ghazni was once again oppressed, this time in the modern history. How could have Mahmud reacted to this???

The closing lines, "...The last thing she could have wanted...The last thing he could have granted.", are symbolical from the point of view of Ghazni that was to be oppressed again, and cursed by Lord Shiva, who finally took his revenge. Think about it!!!
