Love In Red Mesh Bags
Love is yellow
Not pink or red
Not blue like in that song
Not purple like passion
Love is yellow-
A long time ago - a different century-
Thursday night - 9ish
Supper done - books out - big test tomorrow
Econ- (arrgh!)
Suddenly there comes a tapping-
Raven?
Door on chain - face in crack
Man-
Stranger - but not mysterious
"Hi - this is going to sound weird-"
O.k.
"Is this you?"
Holds out magazine - open to "letters" page
"Wow - I didn't know about this."
"So it is you?"
"Yes-"
"I liked what you had to say-"
"Thanks- where did you get this?"
He's a subscriber - I a newstand buyer
He gets his early-
Invitation in - accepted
Sitting on sofa - talking
"Can I get you something to drink?"
Amenities observed -
"That would be great."
Off to the kitchen I go
Not much choice-
"Ice water? or I've got some instant iced tea mix-"
I know - I know - but I was young
"Ice water would be great!"
He is not so young as I-
Ice water for two
"If I knew you were coming I would have had chocolate cake and lemonade."
Small joke - he laughs
More conversation - movies - books - music- nothing major - basics-
Time flies - 10:15 - has to go - he works graveyards
Goodbyes at door
"Maybe we could get together again sometime-"
"You know where I live-"
Another laugh and he's gone
Nice guy - shy - average looking - nice eyes
Back to books-
----- segue -----
Friday afternoon - back from classes-
Econ test - a disaster- (arrgh!)
Through back door - book bag on kitchen table -
Through the living room to front door
Check the mail - open the door
Brown paper grocery bag sitting there
Top folded over- stapled shut
Something in it - heavy-
Bomb?
Not ticking -
Back in kitchen - bag open
Dozen eggs - chocolate cake mix - can of choclate frosting - bag of sugar -
And one dozen lemons in a red mesh bag-
Note at bottom of bag
"I'll be here Sunday at 2!"
One exlamation point - no signature
Simple declaration-
Is he serious?
He was.
Flash forward - new century -
It's embarrassing for a man of my age to occasionally get misty in the produce section-
At the sight of red mesh bags -
I cannot help it-
Love is yellow
Lemon yellow

It is at that Noir.
I'm glad I had not prepared for my interview as yet this morning. It would not do to make an appearance with red rimmed eyes and black smudges of mascara under my eyes.
This is love, and this is poetry. Simple words that speak of emotion and transcend all differences between human beings, and just seek out a soul to touch.
Mission accomplished.

I am touched that you are so touched. But prithee, shed tears not for me, but for those who have never tasted of lemon love as I have. So sentimental I have become of late- mayhaps tis due to this being my natal month- always a time of odd combinings - cake and reflections -
