ISLAND OF THE DOLLS

Music from the Island of the Dolls...
Bonfires in the distance.
We traveled still waters to get here,
and now the music was right on top of us.
Flowing through us.
We danced in the apocalypse.
I lost my cross, when it fell from my neck.
It is where it's needed I suppose.
The offerings hung around us.
Moving like wind chimes.
Polished stones rolled at our feet,
as we hid from the rest.
The boat disappeared toward the mainland.
We were alone...Except for the dolls.
Examining each one,we touched their hollow eyes.
I found one that looked like you.
Oh,how we laughed at the resemblance.
I removed the flask of spirits,
and it became our drinking companion.
With every eerie eye upon us,
we made love on the earth.
The laughter of children afar,
over our passionate sighs.
Morning came abrupt.
Overcast grey, and the first boat was in.
"How did you get hear senor?"
The tour guide stood above me.
The other tourists stared at the man on the shore,
but where was she?
The doll lay beside me with a smile, and her scent.
My cross draped around its neck.
I left Mexico alone that day.
The doll hangs in plain view for all to see.
Probably the only true offering there now.
I'm sure if I ever return,
she'll still be smiling, wearing that cross,
and whatever else she takes, from the others like me...
