Can Anyone Doubt The Power Of The Blues?

Without assessing fault
or pinning any blame
can we tell it like it is
without it sounding too lame

The logic can be reduced
giving no comfort in the fall
reducing even Mensa man
to nothing more then a desperate crawl

So down memory lane
to the famous we so well know
because every guy has been there before
left in tatters and maybe much less dough

Leadbelly spoke of Irene
with her a joyous ride
but if she ever turned him down
he'd "take morphine and die"

Do we dare mention Little Richard's "Lucille"
craving her married and all
by the time she was done with him
all he wanted to was ball

I tell you fellows there are some
out there who you think as so so fine
but if you aren't careful they will
blow more then just your time

My favorite crooner gave subtle warning
Nat wondered the lady whose face held that smile
that "Mona Lisa" tempting smile even deceptive
or mending a broken heart in her own precocious style

The Stones lamented about "Angie"
oh how tragic that love had to die
and even the harshest critic
couldn't say "they never tried"

And don't you dare believe I forgot
the ax slinger some called god
wife of another, that "Layla"
bet that higher power was tempted to use the rod!

So sit down if dare my best bard I will do
stories about love ending in vain
maybe the next you will be more lucky
and not be left standing in the rain

Thanks to Leadbelly, Little Richard, Nat King Cole, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and numerous other writers and artist who express heartbreak via a song.
