Jacaranda Trees

blooms of purples in the late spring
early summer
which was the time he had originally planned
to die
the bougainvilleas flourished in a
welcoming manner
as he held my hand
as loose as he did
we walked as a condescending pair
not really wanting to fight
but he argued his date
that was to be his death
and was expecting me to be left
with the waste scattered within my chest
stubbornly
I held his hand tight
tighter than I had before

you’re not leaving
the words flew up in the air
as I cast an innocent curse
I labelled love

just as the season planned
that week the jacarandas painted
our pathways purple
as amant and I walked side
by side

but as the flowers lost their strength
to fall below and wither and die
my lover to lost his forte
in all of life

the jacarandas were my favourite trees
he said he was thinking of me
as the fraudulent noose
hugged his neck tight

I’m glad he was thinking me
as he climbed that jacaranda tree
I never dared to ascend and risk the heights
for I knew they were unusually weak

he said he was thinking of me
but it was the jacaranda tree
that broke its branch
and saved
his life
