A Week of Silence
Just a little background info-I am a second year art student and for my last project I did a week of silence. The first words out of my mouth after my vow was over was this poem. I read it to my class this morning and was very pleased to have a chance to engage with a live audience, but of coarse I wanted to share it on here as well :)
I am experiencing a lyrical phase
the meaningful phrase
is a praise of our power to speak
so with tongue in cheek
I swallow down my meek
and contridicting commentary
as common conversations become a bore
my tongue loaded with syllables
I simply want something more
than gossip
if we truly listen we learn our lips flap
far more frequently
than is necessary
Our need to communicate
is essential
but I contemplate my state of mind
and find a charming quality in the silence
I can not deny
so I am determined
if I must disturb it
it is with great consideration
of the powerful manifestations
that arise from our conversations
