28 days....
every 28 days....
Everything inside of me
seeps...and weeps...in torrents
of crimson emotion spilling over
the edge of my womb...
Ripping me like pages from a book
that was never read...
As my cervix folds in on itself
twisting my essence into a knotted
existence...of swollenness and irritability
As I become a pain filled tsunami
releasing my rage in wave after painful
wave....of menstrual cramps
I stagger to the bathroom snatching open
the medicine cabinet
pleading with the heavens
To please have left me just 4 extra strength
Midol please....okay there are 3...and let's
add a 400 mg Tylenol and I think I can be pain
free for at least....4 hours.
Just long enough for me to slide into my car
ease into the grocery store and buy another
bottle of Midol on sale with my $1.50 coupon.
Somehow...I make it home after spazzing out
on the guy at the counter...
we usually joke but today isn't the day to ask me
If I'm feeling well.
I mean
You DID just see me stagger in your store with my
Dread Locks all over my head and
You DID just see me
nearly pass out after some little
kid ran right into my stomach
in isle 9...in fact I saw you
grab the kid and take him to his Mother...
(which by the way) Saved his freaking life!
So now you wanna ask me...how I am feeling
REALLY...
My STOMACH HURTS! I hiss as I throw my Midol
and extra absorbants up on the counter....
My eyes bulging from my face ....my complexion
Nearing a steely grey at this point.
I think...he got the message.
Well,5 days from now... I will come
back and bring him a latte...
Till the next 28 days
Comes rolling around.
Ugh!

A man might be sick to death from gangrene from a wound on the arm... but that same man would wear that wound so everyone is able to recognize it and be oh-so-proud. A wound that's visible to a man is like a tattoo. It's why we branded ourselves, even in the earliest times to modify, to change.
A woman's bleeding wound for 5 days isn't a battle-wound, it's a battleworld. That isn't "Oh, yeah, this hurts and if I get through this I'm a baaaad cat." That's... "Oh, goodbye world, Hello total immersion into agony." 'Cept as your piece shows, ain't no goodbye world... it's still there. No glory for it. Just insensitivity and bad jokes. No "Hey, look sisters, I suffered THIS much so I'm a gladiator." No... just ... "stay dignified".
I admire your spirit Ms. Rising Phoenix so I'll let you in a secret true men are supposed to keep quiet and you don't even have to waterboard me to get this one out: We make our wounds into trophies because then we don't feel beta, like babies for suffering. Because we can't ignore that pain like you women can. You ignore what's inside, outside, all around and get through the day and so when some mysognist says something reeeeal original and hilarious like "I don't trust anything that bleeds for 4 days and doesn't die." I ALWAYS have to fire back (and the more dudes are around me, the louder I get with this)
