Forever in rest

Cold is the body I lay in the casket
the features of his face forever frozen
his hands elegantly placed aside
the color of his skin flushed white

at this moment I watch him lay
gently I proceed to rest my hand over his heart
I wish to feel it beat again
I wish to see his chest lift

sadly he remains a statue
a statue of perfectly chiseled stone
carved by the events in his life
his ups his downs, that's who he is

unable to leave his side
I hold his hand and speak to him
forever I said, forever you're mine
no matter where you are

I kiss his forehead and set his hand down
I step back and walk away
no looking back, one foot after another
I can go now knowing he's forever mine.
