An Innocent
An innocent dies in Darfur
And the world is up in arms
Because another singer
Throws out her backstage husband
An innocent is raped in Iran
And her family is enraged
Because they cannot
Beat her to death today
An innocent goes hungry in America
And my neighbors are angry
Because their sport's team
Is losing again
An innocent is saved by a mother's sacrifices
And there is global applause
Because two superstars wed "simply"
With caviar, castle and fireworks
And the world is up in arms
Because another singer
Throws out her backstage husband
An innocent is raped in Iran
And her family is enraged
Because they cannot
Beat her to death today
An innocent goes hungry in America
And my neighbors are angry
Because their sport's team
Is losing again
An innocent is saved by a mother's sacrifices
And there is global applause
Because two superstars wed "simply"
With caviar, castle and fireworks

Re: An Innocent
We live in a juxt opposed world that cares very little about real issues. We want to pretend these things are not happening so we don't disrupt our own little worlds. A very good piece.

As long as we aren't "directly" affected, most never consider the plight of much of OUR world.
The innocents can't defend themselves and we who can must be a voice that enacts change.
Thank you.

Yes Kitty, thankfully we have resources to have a clearer sense of what is going on in the world and not relying on the self serving world press. Thank you

I like the way you think the second lines are for following the first lines, but then you see and it hits you with all it's truth.
Well done.
Well done.

Thank you Rachel. It is the western world we live in. Easier to think of less troubling realities. Much appreciated.

Yup, too true. The world is far too caught up in distraction to care about true issues, which is why change is so hard. If we would all focus and connect as one then we could turn this place around.
The fact that it's easier for people to stay inside their bubbles is only part of the problem. The other part is people are unaware of everything going on. A lot of people don't have the time (work, school, family, exhaustion)to research, and as a result simply just eat what the media spoon feeds them. Very sad.
And this problem could get even worse with the serious threat the internet is under by various countries trying to control the free flow of information.
A good write

"We" choose to ignore the plight, the abuse of much of the world. Thank you for the spot on comment.
