Dinner for One

Sitting at my table,
loneliness is my only company.
My plate served,
I choose my bite as tears roll down my face
my food becomes a sodden site.
There is an ancient belief
that tears are sacred;
that if consumed,
they can be a bad thing
or bring about good.

I know not what mines are,
as they are caused by cruel indifference.
Once I had company at my table
and for many years delighted in cooking
for two, now I sit alone because
he broke that union as if it had no value.
Only solitude accompanies me now,
she and I sit at my table,
a silent witness to the sadness
heavy on my brow.

Today she converses with me, alone,
Is this the prophecy
of all my remaining tomorrows?
Is it all I will ever know?
It is better not to eat than
have to face the loneliness,
but it can not be helped
as tomorrow will be more of the same.

My dinner tonight
has a profoundly bitter taste
it’s my tears that ill-season the dish
I have in front of me.
Oh loneliness, go away from me!
Your presence only emphasizes that he has gone,
tonight and for all those yet to come,
dinner at my table will be only for one.
