Drudgery of Days
They
mangled your dreams
the ones
you should have reached for.
Not everyone
can be a quarterback
or write like Shakespeare,
but once upon a time
you heard that voice
singing in your head
sweet music
loud and clear
though nobody else did.
Then somehow
life trampled you,
the big foot came down
and they sold you on
the drudgery of days.
Grey routine with
responsibility growing
like Chinese whispers,
choking your ears
until the dreams
turned to wax,
just dead cells
to be picked at
and cast out
forgotten with the trash.
How could you buy into
all of that
to be not even a has been
and worst of all
never having tried.

..shakespear ad the quarterback probably didnt feel the drudgery of days, safe in the knowledge that they know their skills.
And probably that many others wouldn't try...
bring on the age of expression

Hopefully this might encourage (just one would be cool) people to attempt what they are good at and not get sucked in to settling for safer options in life. Sometimes ambition can be viewed in the same way as standing on thin ice. Appreciate your feedback, Jezabel.

... thanks Steven - of course most people actually do keep a candle burning, however dimly - and then there's those sayings - "It's never too late" & "Hope springs eternal"

this poem is expressing how I feel at the moment - but, to be honest, couldn't put this emotional state in words. you have just done it for me. thanks, Abra

Many people know that feeling and for many different reasons. But when the world's in a mess - as of now - it tends to come to the surface more. I also think that you can always live well in times of crisis given the correct mindset. Thanks for the empathy, Natalya.

It's amazing to me that so many settle for mediocrity in life without a whimper, Priya.

Thanks for your kind feedback, Priya.

There will always be a moment where you think of what you've become and wonder if you have done the best in your life. In fact, there will be many moments like this. it reminds me of a thing someone once said "What do you want the people at your funeral to say? They are glad you are gone, or they are terribly sad to see such a great person die? You are what you make of yourself."
Thanks for the inspiration! Great write.
