what i didnt get to say

Each and Every morning at 5

She would make me come outside

Simply to smoke and watch the sunrise

She would talk about running away

Teasing lets go… let’s go today

Placing her head on my shoulder

I think that’s when I wanted to tell her

But Sister Jane called out, Tara...October

And just as I thought the moment was over

I turned and her soft lips met mine

As we parted so did the lids of our eyes

She smiled, held my hand as we walked inside

Sister pulled them apart and in our rooms we were confined

I came down for breakfast with the others

Hoping to see Tara, tell her I love her

Walking to the hall that’s when I saw her

Standing at the front door with her new mother

She just smiled and waved as she left

Watching her turn...leave... it broke my heart

Brought me to my knees as it tore me apart

A tear fell down my cheek

As I muttered wait… don’t leave

The door slammed shut, my words never reached

I didn’t sleep for days, not for weeks

At 5 I would stand outside and weep

Smoke half a cigarette and watch the sunrise

Whisper I love you, waiting for a reply
