Eggs: Maroon

This poem was inspired by one of Plato's ideas of love and longing . . .

When I rolled from the nest
my being was split
my countenance was blessed
from a shell: maroon
I came cracked by the lord's almighty spoon

my toiled early days
bear great a weight
blighting my wings
impairing my flight
but when the winds change strong my feet hold tight

I watch my family and fellows fly
from an apt perch
them blossoming in the crimson sky
reaching peak, reaching noon
while I sit whistling a tune

abiding my time
I need not be rash
not yet in my prime,
nor in the right state
I know after all that true love will wait

many a prospecting love did sit
perched with I
until we quit
not for reasons mutual nor I
but for her longing for the crimson sky

so off they flew
and here sits I
no longer longing for the crimson sky
I adjust my feet, turn away and see behind me
a single standing apple tree

and on the branch closest to I
a lonely bird did sit
there alone in the apple tree
with a resonance that fit
there she was whistling that same tune as I

now on our perch we solemnly sit
watching the crowded crimson sky
our wings redundant for our feet are gripped
whistling in harmony our fondest tune
looking down at our nest with eggs: maroon

Because those of us with wings should fly high, enriching and
inspiring those without. Let the gracefulness and wisdom of
their countenance, as they glide seamlessly in the
crimson sky, leave us in utter awe.
