The sunflower

The sunflower:
A flower that is just glanced at
and never truly viewed,
not coveted by many
for I have no captivating perfume,
nor does my appearance inspire sonnets
or a fascination for my hues.

No, my beauty lies elsewhere,
it’s in the way I face the sun
and worship its rays,
how I stand tall and proud
amongst the weeds that would
choke and block my way.
I have no scent to speak of,
but where other
delicate aromatic flowers
would wilt and die, I thrive;
a harsh environment
does not spell my demise.

I am wild,
like the wind and the rain,
I grow where I please and
where I am pleased I stay,
and just when you think
I’ve died and gone away,
come the spring,
I grow strong and tall again.
I come in many varied forms
my colors all are warm,
I will put on a display
dressed in my best for “Ra”
as he warms my face.
I am a humble blossom to say the least,
but my secret is…
there is much I carry within.

I am proliferous;
my oil can be used in many ways,
all my colors can become
dies of multiple shades.
My canes help other flowers
for I’m strong and true,
my fruit feeds the fauna that brings
pleasure with their song to me and you.

I am a sunflower,
ignore me if you choose
when you come this way,
you will miss out on
much more than you know,
for you could not see
beyond my humble display.
