My Mistake Was Loving You

Your words whirled around me
and I couldn't catch my breath.
I hung up the phone, numb.
I couldn't believe it,
I wouldn't believe it.

I had spent the last month
falling in love with you;
you had spent the last month
loving another. Lying to me.

Making a promise I thought I could keep,
we swore to stay friends.
I guess you didn't realize
you couldn't keep it either.
Or maybe you were just too busy using me.

You drowned me in silence
for all of August
and then wondered why
I ignored you.
Honey, please.
It's not that hard to figure out.

Mistake number two.
I let you through,
into my life again
only to be hurt.
You told me you loved me
for the first time.
LIES.
You only used me.

I knew it was wrong
and so should have you
but we ignored it;
swept the fact that you
had a girlfriend
under the rug.

All semester I chose to be with
you, believing your selfish words.
You used me, over and over
but now I'm free.
It took time, but now I know
my mistake was loving you.
