Nocturne Opus

By the still and quiet waterside,
a lone soul sits in contemplation, dry eyed.
The moon dressed in star-studded twilight
while the fauna congregate for the evening highlight,
a nocturne concerto that is soon to play
the lilting notes of a flute’s oeuvre.

Filling the air is a gentle musical larghetto,
a melody that should have been a dueto,
melancholy sounds yet ever so sweet
float through the night in a delicate beat.
Slowly the notes begin to rise,
wrenching tears from the musician's hooded eyes.

Yet there are no witnesses to this event
for all the eyes are of non human descent,
the animals all listen in hypnotized silence
as the notes ascend and descend in lyrical compliance,
slowly the flautist continues to play
and it seems even time has ceased it’s sway.

Everything in nature seems to go motionless
as the music comes to its crescendo,
“la cuspide del concerto”.
As she arrives at the coda or finale
of the opus nocturne’s totale,
all eyes rest on the musician.

Gently the musical notes begin to fade
as the night’s silence once again reigns,
the animals begin to move and stir
as all goes back to the evening’s overture,
the flautist lowers her instrument and quietly sighs,
gets up and disappears into the mists of the night.
