the exasperated look
on your face
when I hugged you
goodbye
sealed your fate
affectionate is my nature
and yet
for your sake
I have reined it in
time and time again
you are the one

not me
illustrative of myriad reasons
why we can never be lovers
maybe not even friends
our relationship
always on your terms

I have squandered much
time and energy
upon your impassable walls

of the constant uphill climb

but that is not all

laughter joy affection sex
