the devil's cherries

Behind attractive "purple stems", looking good enough to eat,
the solo, lonely man will hide, he wants to be discreet.
Behind the leaves no one wants, cause they're "bitter to taste",
he clings to "the lowest ones", safe in "solitary" waste.
"Atropabelladonna" snaps, to exhale his "drying stink",
repelling intruders from his lair, so no one will come to feast.
He calls himself "satan's herb", wants none to enter here,
his heart is internaly "sedated", protected from his fear.
He loves his "nightshade" well, to make his "narcotic brew",
'tho it won't allow him to forget, the hell that he lives through.
He screams, i'm "herb of witches", they all must stay away,
i've no internal value good, to give to you this day.
But fearless woman is attracted to his "bulb's dark, inky, juice"
and it tastes so "sweetly intense", she at once becomes seduced.
Enticed by the beauty of "the naughty man's berries",
she doesn't believe he is poison, and calls him "black cherry".
Now her "pupils grow", while injesting his poetic beauty,
treasuring his every spoken word, becomes her heart's duty.
"Complete loss of voice", words cease rolling off her tongue,
she "bends forward" in a curtsy, there is no prose for this love.
He leans her again upright, gives her "sips of mustard and water"
because in truth, "atropabelladonna" can heal himself and others.
The magical, medicinal uses: "narcotic, diuretic, mydriatic",
"lessens irritability and pain of broken hearts"...sweetly ironic
This man of "amazing nature" can heal, and should never forsake,
his most important capability, to "prevent a heart from pain."
