Locked in the Past

Tall emerald grass and the swaying trees
Why do warm memories always have a breeze?
The sun shines lazily and it’s at ease
You can hear the joy in the air with the bees

But in my bedroom I sit and plunder
Miserable clouds I’m crying under
The emptiness around calls out to wonder
Patiently silent, waiting for the thunder

But my thoughts lead me to an old memory
With laughing friends surrounding me
The smiling sun reaches through this tree
I’m asking myself how happier could I be?

But the loved summers and I have been widowed
The singing I hear is tears falling on the window
The darkening curfew falls quick and I wallow
The dreaded weather scrapes my insides hollow

So I take my mind to a place elsewhere
Dandilions fall softly upon silky hair
I look at beautiful angels smiling so fair
Contentment like this is quite a rare

But the beautiful angels have now vanished
This dungeon locks me up I’m banished
With lonesome guarding this cell I can only wish
That this feeling will someday diminish

But in the meantime I’ll take myself out this cell
With memories of heaven why am I in hell?
Flying with birds I didn’t imagine I would have fell
Locked in the past the future has no comfort to tell
