An Open Letter

You're the glorified part of me
I try not to remember..
Much less admit to.
In your aftermath,
I can be sixteen all over again-
Sailing through Kansas,
On waves of adrenaline and exhilaration,
Delicately wrapped in the distorted daydream
Of true love-
Only to expose my first dose of reality-
Shaking for days from the detox
Of broken promises and dilated pupils.
I should have known
Such explosive chemistry was deadly.
I followed a moment,
Knowing I could lose it all.
Instead,
I discovered myself for the first time-
I've yet to look back.
I owe a lot to you,
But you'll never again
Get the benefit of the doubt.
Still, I've thought often of you,
And the mess you left behind,
The doors you opened.
You showed me some of
The best times I've ever had--
But even two days and three words,
Weren't enough reason for me to stay
And watch you slowly kill yourself-
But the past-
Damn!
I wouldn't change a thing.
The worst of it comes when I decide to redecorate,
And we shake hands
Like we've never met before-
That's best I think...
Anything else would be...
Well...Amazing....
Deadly- but amazing....
Cause all you have to do is smile.
