Image for the poem blues for a lonely night

blues for a lonely night

slow death in a pretty bottle

the story of my life, written in spilled whiskey
bustin my ass all day for a few bucks
so i can blow it all on crow every night
in a string of broken down saloons

ghosts of foolish dreams hangin on my back,
whispering love stories that never happened

~~~ i drift back, to sensuous tropical nights,
        hot Spanish women whose notorious flowers
        captured me in the push-pull of that
                            velvet-sided vice,
        the nights that never fade
        (storyline of my wettest dreams) ~~~
i sit & write my history on dainty napkins,
the piano raining tearful notes under soft light,
then crumble them up, toss em to the floor
just like that big hand slaps you around
all of your days, then crumbles your soul,
tosses it into hell, casual-like.
& all of the sweet whispers in all of
the dusty poems i hold in my heart
can’t blow away these splendid blues –
the whiskey rocks me, tender as a lover, & just
before the macizo tosses me into the street,
the piano’s melody kisses me goodnight…
