Sisters

sisters, 18 months apart
and so much distance between them
their mother inquires
about their childhood
a memory
don't you remember when?
c'mon you must remember

she stares ahead trying to focus
on the question
the answer
confusion turns to frustration

she remembers nothing of
their childhood,
and glances back at her sister
as if it is her fault

if only her own memories
had been clouded in forgetfulness,
she remembers enough
for both of them
