Wings of Spikes

Once black velvet wings
Now weighted stubs remain
Of a shattered heart
Wrapped in prickly thorns

The Dark Angel will fly never more
Her toes rooting to Hell
Grounding her blackened soul
On the outer banks of Styx

The heart she vowed to protect
With all of her existence
Released their hold mid flight
Destroying her heart

With each finger lifted
An ebony quill fell
Causing her to descend
Into an uncontrollable tailspin

The clouds opened up
Amethyst lighting shot
A lion's roar of thunder burst
As tears of blood fell to earth

In failing desperation
She reached out for his hand
Flapping and flailing her thorny tips
Only to shred her ivory skin

All hope was lost
As barbs began to spread
Her once exquisite body
Began to fade away

The only remaining sign of her inner beauty
Are the berries
On which you feast
Found deep in the dark forest

Angels who dare to love
Yet have it stripped away
Remain forever delivering sustenance
Feeding multitudes her  fruit
