It's Never A Woman That Defeats A Man

It's never a woman that defeats a man.
Nor the bottle,
or the cigarettes,
or the drugs,
or the lack of ambition,
or the lack of direction.
It's not his upbringing
or his downfall.
It's not some sort of trivial sequence of consequence.
It isn't the lack of love or being loved.
It isn't the lack of hate or being hated.
First, and foremost,
it could be the lack of all those things.
Some might use such things as a arsenal.
A blanket to keep them warm in a alleyway.
A steadfast mind to build an indestructible wall
to use as a bullet proof vest from this whole life thing we all seem interested to dive into,
but cower as soon as we stub our toes or scratch our thumb.

No,
we're all scared.
Your Mother,
Your Father,
Your Sister,
Your Brother.
Your local Government Elect
and the many men above him.
The Police State,
The Firemen,
The Soldiers,
and Especially.
Your news 'reporters and correspondents.
The musicians, the writers, the painters,
Artists.

We're all scared.
And as I sit here now in my office,
typing up my silly little poems,
I'm scared.
However,
I am not defeated. No.
I am still here.
My gracious can of beer is still here.
My lover is still here.
And I still have many words left in my head.

We all may be terrified.
But not all of us are defeated.
