An ambitious poem referencing the Greek legend of Penelope and Odysseus. I think it succeeds well in its brevity and modernity. Would love to have heard you improvise and sing those words. A simple declamatory reading doesn't cut it here. You are a fantastic singer, aren't you? O.K. Let's keep it a secret!

Now, second, on to the singing, you ambitious man. :-p I thought of singing it, but I couldn't come up with something to suit it, especially since I was, rather rapidly, improvising. As far as fantastic singing is concerned - no, no, not that. Seriously. Just average. :-) And, that's enough.

All of the people you've mentioned, here's the thing: no one can know this: what other greatnesses might they have accomplished had they lived longer lives, had their magnificence and often tortured genius thriven further, had optimal circumstances for further floration, growth, and development? None can know.
None. Can. Know.
I'll agree with you in one respect here: it's not about old age. You are absolutely correct about that. However, it is about seizing the most of every single moment allotted and living what life is granted well and fully and cognizant of the tremendous gift life really is because it is. Oh, it is. Even when it doesn't feel like it is, it is, luv. It so is. :-*

I think the thing that disturbs me about utilizing these particular examples is the idea that they lived to produce some great work then died once it was completed; I don't hold with that. They just died, no glory to the thing, rather tragically, in fact.
I think it's fallacious thinking to say they stuck around long enough to create the pinnacle of their existence then went out. It doesn't ring true, just rings hollow and like glory worship of an idealization.

Perhaps that was true for Sadegh Hedayat and even Tony Scott; I remain unconvinced for the others...
As far as obsession over life extension measures or living to be 900 without consideration of why or what for, that's macabre and tragic and gruesome and pathetic as far as I'm concerned.
Living merely to remain alive is no way to live at all. However, this notion of living only to create some great masterwork then dying or choosing to exist once it's complete is just as foolish and foolishly melodramatic in my book.
