ashamed to be a women.

I don't know if I'm proud to be a woman
or a little bit ashamed
in a society that peddles
instant beauty
instant fame.

When sexuality is demonized
by those in authority
and the perfect woman
is someone who deceives

we teach our little girls
constantly to strive
inadverdently we teach
that they have to be desired

yet we also teach them
and my mother did the same
that womanhood is wrong
and we should all be ashamed

I went to christian college
want to know what I learned?
that eve was blamed for evil
and that lesson really hurt

that I should hide myself
behind long skirts
and modest tops
to avoid causing temptation
as if it was all my fault

that childbirth is painful
because my sister lied
what is this world we're living in
that seems to be one sided

I'm not blaming men either
women do it too
with soft spoken advice
on what "good Christian Girls" should do
