Thoughts on Religion

I lifted up my eyes to the hills
where the shanty towns dance to the beat of a million drums as
residents flock in their Sunday's best
to houses of praise mangled between the rubble of their livelihoods.
I lifted up my eyes and saw a Hamas rocket fly across the sky and
an Israeli rocket fly across the sky while
God's foot soldiers died in a war fought for a face never seen.
And as voices rose singing Hallelujah and Alhamdullilah men forgot that they were men and that blood always runs
red.
I lifted up my eyes to see an American missionary board a plane to Iraq where the only thing less important than oil was the name people called God...and that Allah was the reason for the war.
They would never mention that the invasion came on a president's command
and the president was commanded by that green man greed.
I lifted up my eyes and saw the olive skin of a Indonesian woman pass.
She had tears in her eyes and no roof over her head as
a tsunami had erased every part of life that taught her
who she was.
I saw her quick enough to take the razor blade and
it was stained by that same crimson red spilled over Gaza.
Then it didn't matter whether I prayed to Allah or Yahweh or whomever.
She only needed a hand and a reason to live.
Then finally, I lifted up my head and thought about God.
I wondered how all this evil could exist under his stewardship.
I looked passed creed and race and hoped that one day we would all
find an equal place.
Because the blood of the victims of all our wars run red.
My help comes not from the Lord.
It comes from the law
