Tormented

Flashes go by quickly
Was it real? Or my imagination?
Haunted by memories of the past
Taunted by emotions out of control
  
No one sees the inner struggle
They look upon me as if all is well
Never seeing the tortured soul
Crying out from behind the bright eyes and smile
  
Trapped in an invisible prison
Guarded by nightmares, fears, and woes
My troubled mind goes unnoticed
I remain powerless in this unmanned fortress
  
Can't tell if I am awake or asleep
A never-ending nightmare is my life
Everyone sees me as carefree and without grief
Not discerning the tormented soul beneath.
