I Think This is Why We Don't Talk Anymore

At 3 in the afternoon you wanted to make small talk
Speaking to my turned back
Your shadow told me you were still far enough out of my reach so I couldn’t touch you
Physically detached
And I was emotionally blocked
I didn’t reply
By 3:01 you were crying
Saying that I hated you
Your feet left the room
Followed reluctantly by your shadow
A part of you was waiting for me to call you back
Expecting me to apologize
At 9 that night I walked in
Heard your muffled sobs
And met dad’s drunken remark
Saying that I hated you
I was too tipsy to care about much of anything
Now I don’t want to sound heartless
But theres only so much crying I can withstand
Especially when you say I’m the one causing it
And with a blotchy face you glared at me
Pushed me away and told me to leave
But your shadow left by the lights fell on my arm
You were still hoping I would apologize
Three days later I was still silent
And you were still crying
And the sky was a permanent shade of gray
Your shadow was disappearing
But when you had asked me to choose sides
Saying if I chose his then I was against you
You made me choose between a voice and an existence
And I decided to exist a little while longer and not say anything
You cannot expect everything to go back to normal because we aren’t talking about it
I will not make small talk with you
Let you brush shit under the rug
You always brush shit under the rug
At 3 in the afternoon the next day I realize
We still aren’t talking
And I no longer notice your shadow
