What The Lord Said

I asked for freedom,
And the Lord said
“I shall open up a path before you
Upon which you will walk.”

I asked for change,
And the Lord said
“I shall open up a path before you
Upon which you will walk.”

I prayed something for myself,
But I know not if it was selfish,
And the Lord said
“I shall open up a path before you
Upon which you will walk.”

I have ridden to the end of the line,
Where the rails run into the sand
And the Lord said
“I shall raise up the tracks into the new,
For the former season has passed away.
And I shall open up a path before you,
Upon which you will walk.”

The Lord giveth,
And the Lord taketh away,
And what was given for a time,
Is now a loss.

Loss shall again come ‘round,
As the birth pains of freedom and change,
Strip away, until all is but a set of memories,
And the feathers of the wings of angels
Dust away regret.

Let the dead lie still,
Let the living press on.
