Puddles Dressed Like Me

They ask me to describe myself.
Describe the way I twirl
Arms spread wide
Chopping at their resolve
I aimlessly countdown
Until they decide they're tired of flinching
Or sighing at my paper cut scratched skin
I beg them to notice
Asking why?
For the millionth time
It doesn’t take long before they confess
I’m just like all the other girls
Blooming under attention
Facing the sun heated by compliments
Its easy to warm puddles

But I thought I could be an ocean
An abyss of future promises
Instead I’m inches deep
Covered in the false confidence the mirror gives
The more eye contact I make with myself
The more I know how to lie
Make them believe I know how to lure them into the range of my wingspan
They don’t realize I never learned to fly
I’m hoping they'll be my hot air balloon ride
Or the gust of wind in this kiteless sky

When they take away the sun
My puddle is all dried up
I ask them why it hasn’t rained in ages
And they mutter that its time I learned to live with the drought
That I’m shutting all the clouds out
Saying they aren’t dark enough to cover me like a storm
I need tornadoes
Not the general mistings of nice guys
Washed up and stirring with pebbles of last years memories
I hope my murkiness will somehow pull them closer
So I can suck them in
