Dinner

We sit across from each other
In a scarred booth in some generic
Restaurant
Surrounded, by others just like us

Young lovers leaning in too close
Wearing desire in their eyes
Causing old ones to cluck their tongues
And disapprove for they have forgotten
The brazenness of youth

The thrill of whispered promises
Below the din of human noise
Of stolen glances
And jokes there punchlines half forgotten
Yet funny all the same.

Of  flushed embarrassment
And passionate debate
That takes the place of things
That happen behind closed doors

They have forgotten the thrill of taking that communion
Composed of food and drink, that says simply for a moment
I have chosen,
To sit across from you and hang with anticipation from your
Lips,

While I imagine all to come,
To wonder how your sheets will feel  against my flushed skin
And be captivated by the pitches of your voice,
And the quirk of your lips.

Oh, how cruel to forget the adrenaline
Of precocious youth and settle into calm
Disapproval of young lovers in a booth
