Flared and Pompous

truly nothing beats the success
of a walrus beached on the sand
speaking, with a pipe on its mouth
lets talk of food, cabbages and kings
or ships that move on tattered sails
from life away from coral shells
and gardens of steel magnolia

he yawned his teeth glimmering slightly
through seaweeds he had munched
trying to get at the hiding shells
he wiggled a little on his tail
triggering scampers from hermit crabs
as the egret watched his back
the walrus smiled so cunningly

would you trade your wings for mine
for sure they flap on my end
but stronger they are than yours
pray trade now what say you

the egret looked at him with jaded eye
croaked a rather offensive remark
offended walrus flapped his tail

o say have you seen
the shining strings of pearls
I picked them from their shells
rather tasty, their hosts were
a single knock how do you do
and a resounding slurp

he coyly rubbed his ample tummy

he wiggled on the sand
making a good curve for his bulk
sighed, contented and closed his eye
up on the hill two naughty boys
ecstatic with their birthday gifts
looking for a target to shoot
aimed for the beached walrus

and pulled the trigger.
