spearmint

wanted to tell her that she forgot to close the door
that the whole world was threatening to trickle in
but she flicked the spool of silver from off my desk
before i could strand together the first few syllables

she always does this when she's drinking
when i want her most

her twirl i told her is only maddening
when she whispers my name- and
now she sang it prettier than best intentions

the whole world was in
and it was maddening

she loves me more than strung silver
and doesn't need to say it
i can tell by how she ignores it when
most beautiful ambitions turn to chewed gum

she asked me if she could stay through the night
but if i could refrain from lettering the hold of her
she pleaded with me not to bring anything back
and i asked her to close the door behind her
