Standing In The Rain

It was cold, freezing actually, the rain wouldn’t let up. I felt your presence across the courtyard, your gaze on my back. I tried to ignore it. A quiet sense of nostalgia and the sound of the rain hitting the pavement filled the courtyard. I could only stand it for a moment before I gave up. I walked over to you, thinking of what to say, how I could logically explain myself. I stopped in front of the bench you were sitting on, my expression solemn. You wouldn’t look at me. “I’m sorry” I spoke first. You ignored me. “Look, I won’t be a problem for you much longer. In fact, I’m leaving, but I can’t pretend I don’t have feelings for you”. “Then why would you do it?” you stood, looking me in the eye. I looked down at my feet. “What do you want from me?” you stared at me. I brought my hand up to your cheek, brushing the raindrops aside with my thumb. You did nothing but stare as I leaned in and caught you in a kiss. You didn’t kiss back, but I savored it, knowing it would be our last. I pulled away slowly, eyes closed, trying to hold onto what I already knew was gone. You looked away, the tears brimming your eyes, but you wouldn’t cry. I knew you wouldn’t. “I’m sorry” I said again. “For everything” I added, as I turned and walked away, leaving you standing in the rain.
