A Work in Progress

When I came to goodland Kansas six months ago, after my now ex girlfriend Megan kicked me out of the one bedroom apartment we lived in in Natoma, I was a strung out, junky speed freak, depressed, lost, and lonely.
My mom, also an addict, had a room here at the motel 7, so I came here, figuring I'd crash in her room for a week or so, fill out some job applications, and if I didn't have any luck I figured either I'd check myself into rehab, or spend the winter in jail.
Then Tess and Troy, the motel manager and the maintenance man offered me a room and board job helping Troy with maintenance.
That was when things began to change in my life for the better, not all at once, but little by little. For the first two months I was here I was still shooting dope. Me and Troy getting caught tweaking on New Years Eve by Tess was what prompted me to finally clean up.
My friend\tattoo artist, himself an ex dope freak with 15yrs off dope and his family have been amazingly supportive, loving, and helpful as well. I've had a few small relapses, but I haven't gone back to the life, and I'm weeding out the negative influences around me that are harmful to my sobriety.
The last months been rough, my girlfriend moved out here to be with me, but her fathers failing health and losing her hard earned position with her company took a toll so she moved back home. Shortly after that she informed me she was pregnant, two weeks later she miscarried.
I told my roommate/best friend the other day that this is the most I've ever gone thru without picking up a needle so I'm pretty proud of myself. Me and her are trying to work things out, and I'm pretty sure if I can save some money and get a car so that we can see each other more often then we'll be ok.
One thing this crazy ride has taught me is that life's a hard mother fucker and betrayal is far more commonly found then friendship, so keep your circle small and don't hand out trust to people blindly.
