Sleeping Death

When I remember you, I think of how beautiful you were.
I stand in the funeral parlor in front of your casket
almost in tears at the thought of how young you were.
I almost touch you and want to say, “Wake up, Honey.
You don’t belong here.” It seems like you’re asleep or
that I’m in a hellish nightmare in which there is no end.
You look so beautiful, I can’t believe you’re gone forever.
I want to let my emotions go, to just scream in a blind rage,
to cause someone to feel like I do. I wonder if I’ll ever move
on. The hurt I feel is a never ending well of pain. I guess the band
Cinderella had it right when they recorded “Don’t know what you got
(Until it’s gone).
