When I met the devil

I once met a strange man. I had seen him briefly before this encounter. A person I know had said after talking to him that "This is the most insane person I have ever met". This didn't deter me and a friend of mine from letting the man join our table, when he later asked to do so. First a little about the man's appearance...

There was something slightly (or more than so) diabolical about the way he looked. He was not young but seemed vigorous enough. His hair was quite long and black as a raven's wing. Black (and piercing) was his gaze, and that also went for his leather jacket, his pants and his shoes. Perhaps I mention too many details. I could just as well have written that his entire apparel was black, but I will describe the shoes in more detail. As I've mentioned, they were black but not only that... They looked like he had recently walked through fire with them. One almost expected seeing smoke still coming from them. Also, one got the feeling that there was a fire burning inside the man, and an almost infernal one at that. As I've already mentioned, there was something more than a little diabolical about the man and what he said certainly didn't help to change the impression.

"The world ended," he said when he started talking again, and added a date that was in the past. "I haven't slept for 30 days," he continued. My acquaintance and I looked at him in an (I suspect) odd way, but we let kept letting him talk.

"God has already decided who is going to heaven and who is going to hell," he went on to say. "66.6% of humanity are going to hell, 33.3% are going to heaven and the fate of the rest is as yet undecided". We or at least I had at this point understood that the man was crazy, but in a way that was more than a little scary. He kept talking, mostly to my friend, since I had to leave the table for a while.

Not so long after I came back to the table, my friend got really angry with the man and said "You told us you wanted to join in on our conversation, but you have been doing most of the talking. Now I'm asking you to leave".

The man did as he was told but before doing so, he had something more to say. "I don't know about you," he said looking at me. "But you," he continued in a sinister tone of voice as he turned his gaze on my acquaintance. "I know we're you are going". He smiled a smile of seeming contentment after uttering these last words, and thence left our table and the diner. This was in the middle of the night, so I watched him walking off into the darkness until he disappeared.

This happened several years ago, but it was weird enough to have etched itself into my memory. And what of my (former) acquaintance? Well, as it happened, the strange man was right about him in a way. He turned out to be a complete bastard, and if there is an afterlife with only two possible places of eternal residence, I have a notion of in which of them he will reside.
