Death Of A Fool

There's that loneliness I didn't want to come,
As I tip my glass to the rising sun.
There's these echoes of an old, dying Man,
Saying "Son, I hope you'll understand,
This Life, it overcomes a Soul,
And we're forced to watch with no control.
But someday soon, as sure as you and me,
I know you'll see why I had to leave."

The Time went by and the years passed slow,
Still I can say that I do not know,
Why He had to leave, why He could not stay,
Why He left me bound for disarray..
Sometimes I think that It was all He knew,
Cause His Daddy went and left him, too.
I've spent my life just wondering why
He thought I'd know why He wished to die.
I could never keep a friendship down,
I'd always push away who'd come around.
I found myself fighting a Whiskey War,
Killed a thousand bottles, maybe more.
And as I look across my battlefield,
I wonder what answers It should yield.
I've spent all this time trying to understand
How the world could overcome a Man.
And now I feel so lost deep down inside,
I just want to find some place to hide.
I want to cast myself, from here, astray,
Hop in my whiskey jar and float away.

Now it hits me as I'm sitting here,
As I watch the darkness disappear.
Just as bright as that old, rising Sun,
I see now all of the damage done.
And there's this echo of an old, dying Man,
Saying "Son, I hope you'll understand.
This Life, it always overcomes a Soul,
And we're forced to watch with no control...."
Now I know that I've been overcome,
I killed another bottle trying to run.
Now I feel like I'm comfortably numb,
It seems my Whiskey War is all but won.
Soon I'll drift away and wont return,
I learned all that I needed to learn.
I know now how Life can beat a Man,
With His own Mind, with His own hands.
I understand.
