The Separation

I’ll take a long walk
Down the cold concrete alleys
Passing a few spray painted images
Semi permanent
I’ll reach out to touch them
Palm flat on the white stone
Trembling from fast dip in temperature
Lingering snowflakes
I’ll know better tomorrow
After I wake up from
Running in my dreams, but never fast enough
Fleeting
I’ll wander through these corridors
Up and down stained walls
Breathing what I don’t recognize
Stagnant air
I’ll lean out of the window
Up high wishing I was far far away
Looking out over the rooftops
Still standing
I’ll crawl back down the forgotten stairs
Through weather beaten door frames
Moving over frayed carpet edges
Here they’ll stay
But there I’ll go
I’ll take a walk
Down the sawdust trails in my mind
Trying to shake off the past but knowing I never can
