Darling

Darling don't you know that I love you?
I may not have known you existed
until it was too late...
but you were still a part of me.

Darling, don't you know that I miss you.
My chest aches with the burning questions
left unanswered about you.
Darling, didn't you know?

Sometimes I picture your hands
and your toes
and your striking dark eyes.
I have a name for you darling,
one I will take to my grave.

Darling, I apologize.
Your protector I was not.
Four months I abused my body;
four months you struggled.
I hope you are at peace, now.

Darling, I feel so alone now.
I wish I could have held you.
Oh how I wish you had survived.

Sometimes I dream about you,
but only when I can't sleep at night.
Once I looked in your eyes and you smiled;
that was when I knew I loved you, darling.

Darling, don't you know?
I will never forget you.

Darling, don't you see?
You are better off now.

Darling, hear my words;
I love you.
