Up Close

My knees press against the rough desert ground
The one sided kisses have ceased
I'm straddling a sleeping miraged body
Up close and personal
I realize
This desert
Is nothing like him
And everything like me

Unlike the starry sky
Who's blackness accepts any emotion I throw
He can only take a few
Excluding the one that I'm scared to be alone

His tentative voice
whispers and kisses
Unlike the confident cacti

His restless hands
cannot caress me
As the smooth wind could

His limp and lacking muscles
cannot support me
Contrasting limestone mountains
In the background

There is one similarity however

His dehydrated drunkenness
Reflects the water deprived desert
Driving the unprepared passerby to madness

My dear please stop tugging on my sleeve
I cannot follow you
Down your uncertain solitary path
My compass may waver throughout the year
But I have a good sense of direction despite the fact

My knees press against the rough desert ground
I look west, past your sleepy head
And know that's where I'm bound to in the end...
