misunderstanding poetry
if a poem says ride me like a balloon
we will fly into dreams that were never dreamed
wired landscapes constructed of algebraic runes
back alleys & white broadways where the dancers
offer a pointed stick to cure every misery
an undiscovered place in your heart that proves
heaven is merely a rehearsal for hell –
maybe I don’t quite get the fascination
or even if I want to go there.
if a poem attempts to stun me with metaphors
and similes, allegories that leave me perplexed
adrift in an incomprehensible labyrinth
I won’t remain trapped;
I will interpret my way out.
if a poem speaks aggressively, addressing issues
that have wrecked my innocence & faith
if it has no forbearance of foul language
if it screams fuck you! for leading me with vacant
promises, for breaking me down with a violent
passion that I perceived as love
fuck you for dropping me into this forgotten place &
not even stopping to lift me out before you walked away
fuck you!
if a poem says that
I don’t need an analysis
I know what it means.
All writing remains the property of the author. Don't use it for any purpose without their permission.

"I will interpret my way out"
Right on, JF! :)
I like reading poems of all stripes. Each one - if it is a "well-formed string" - will often be difficult to read because it creates its own delicate balance, not the balance of the reader.
But once the poem is unlocked (in the myriad of ways as there are readers ) its beauty is set free.

You made your point and right you are. Poetry should trigger our fantasy, ensheathe us, make us think, make us sink into awe. But as much as different human being are, poetry is, too.

Balloons to concrete and below; perception and passion is your unique show with your flare to break down and convey with what we can easily relate to with your gift.
