The World's Boys From Liverpool
Nothing I can write here that hasn't been done
nothing new under the sun
just my spin and if makes you grin
maybe I can proclaim a modest win
My take on four boys who played the rock
group was so much more then the sum of the parts
each vital and creative artists who when the magic died
stilled made pretty impressive music
I start with John because his outspoken views
on war and injustice on the whole
caught my liking when I was just out of my teens
he may have had his excesses but he always retained his soul
give it all up to raise Sean
sadly would never see him grow up
was just starting to find something with Julian
one December day and then he was gone
Paul got me hooked on the bass jamming
what I admired even more
he sowed his wild oats before tying the knot
what a love for the ages that this wisdom brought
even the albums the critics discarded
at least one masterpiece about love is found
and the stuff with Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder
suggest the Englishman could even get down!
Perhaps the most unrecognized while in the group setting
George was the rock star that didn't want to be
while two of the others spared in the newspapers
this spiritual gardener just wanted his ukulele
the songs that he saved up made his first solo work a gigantic hit
in another band with Dylan it was easy to see his wit
also branched out to making films
Time Bandits and such
oh yes an interesting hobby for the race cars he liked very much
Ah Ringo though not known as much for song composition
held that beat steady song after song
his easy going manner what a pleasant bloke to hang with
and less spastic when he gave up the bongs
the three others gladly helped with his solo records
the all-star bands were such a delight
and when Shelia E. accentuates the drumming
well you must be doing something right
So as we hit the that 50th anniversary
of the Beatles coming to the states
let's put to rest the hope for another Beatles
the truth should be told to you mate
that there will never be another like those 4 lads
the industry and the whole scene has so changed
all the circumstances made them once in history
a home not to be found on the range
And I clearly didn't frame their tunes together
focusing on life after the break
but without the group do they even become solo artists
or perhaps another career do they all take
for me I like to think of Beatles music as extending
to the solo gems they did produce
Like how Imagine and Ram were filled with messages
back and forth from John and Paul
"Silly Love Songs" Paul's response to John
when John said Paul's mush drove him up the wall
or when with John's passing
Ringo and Paul sang backgrounds vocals for George
"Here Today" such a gorgeous song about how
John and Paul were so tight
I think I hear Ringo starting to sing
telling us all pleasant dreams and "Goodnight"
nothing new under the sun
just my spin and if makes you grin
maybe I can proclaim a modest win
