petals
how soft are these petals
on my upturned face
I close my eyes
and feel the surge anew
of dancing in their rain
with you
falling on the grass,
laughing into tears
sinking into love
rewinding the years
to our sundappled
youth where we hid
from cars in tall grass
and lied together beneath
the stars on forgotten
paths,
open to the canopy
of high noon sun
and midnight sky
and to the mysteries
that slipped between
the pines,
shied away from inquiring eyes
this exotic new emotion
was ours alone
as if we were the first
and last to feel the
electric rush
of first love
it was summer
and we were so young
when those petals fell
but it seems now
the tree where we met
beckons us home
on my upturned face
I close my eyes
and feel the surge anew
of dancing in their rain
with you
falling on the grass,
laughing into tears
sinking into love
rewinding the years
to our sundappled
youth where we hid
from cars in tall grass
and lied together beneath
the stars on forgotten
paths,
open to the canopy
of high noon sun
and midnight sky
and to the mysteries
that slipped between
the pines,
shied away from inquiring eyes
this exotic new emotion
was ours alone
as if we were the first
and last to feel the
electric rush
of first love
it was summer
and we were so young
when those petals fell
but it seems now
the tree where we met
beckons us home
