Calendars

I think it’s time to buy a new calendar
One that doesn’t forget what day of
The week it is,
One with pages that turn a little slower
A calendar to pull me back, to
Keep my life on track
Being sure I don’t forget my birthday
Or when to buy Christmas presents.
I want a calendar that won’t cross off
All my days quite so fast,
Who knows how many I’ve got left.
Don’t want to spend them tripping
Over forgotten Saturdays or trapped
In an everlasting Monday morning.
Just give me some warning —
Tell me when Spring is coming, don’t
Keep me cold in this perpetual winter.
You said it’d be snowing, so
Why do I only see sun?
This isn’t sweater weather anymore,
Sweating because my calender told me
That it was December, in June.
I’m not sure it knows how many days
There are in a month because my
Life is passing me by and I swear this
Morning I was convinced it was July
But my calendar turned ahead too fast,
Always turning it’s pages too soon.
And I’m tired,
Of always being behind or too far
Ahead. I need a calendar
With photos of babies, kittens and
Quotes that make me laugh, poems to
Start my days off with —
Not naked fireman on the fridge.
Maybe if I had one who reminded me
     Gently
That today was the first day of June,
It’s Saturday and already passed noon;
Maybe I wouldn’t feel so pressured to
Do something important, before she
Flips another page and all of a sudden
I’m fresh out of chances
To be better, someone different who’s
Calendar makes them a little happier.
I need one whose chances are
    Limitless.
With millions of pages left to turn,
Countless seasons for me to freeze and
Burn, to rake the leaves on my lawn.
One who can let me know when it’s
Time to put long sleeves back on and
Won’t tell me to wear sweaters in sun.
I need a calendar to pull me back, to
Take me back to where I was and
Keep my life on track.
I need my old calendar back.
