A Sponsor's Lecture (Novel Excerpt)

I wrote this yesterday as more of a therapeutic rant at myself and realized I can fit it into my novel near the end, when my protagonist, Jackson, is trying to sober up. This is what his A.A. sponsor tells him:

"If there's one thing that you've mastered, it's fucking up everything in your life that has positive potential then hanging on so tight that you squeeze the life out of any opportunity you have at redemption so that you're left with nothing but self-doubt, self-pity, and worst of all, self-loathing which leads you into isolation from all forms of human contact and you run back to the only friend that you perceive as having never let you down. The needle. At which point, your perceptions become your reality and you are truly alone. This is your pattern. I really don't get it, having never relapsed myself, but here's the truth of it: you're fucked up over a woman. Why you insist on chasing the one's you can't have, I'll never understand. Especially when you have no job, no car, no money, and you still have plenty of women who are frankly out of your league practically throwing themselves at you. Good women and fine women that you're ignoring because you've got your head up your ass. Remember, I've met some of them and I'm baffled at the way you brush off these opportunities over and over again. Jackson, listen to me very carefully. She is not the one. You deserve better than her and in this case, you need to be grateful that you chased her away."
