LIFER

The job sucks . . .
Probably more than most,
I mean it's not your typical
nine to five gig for sure.
You know how every job's
got some asshole you don't like,
well, in my line of work
I'm the asshole day in and day out.
I'm like a traveling salesman
only what I got, nobody wants to buy.
I'm overworked like everybody else
in this fucked up life and times,
I mean you read the paper lately?
The list keeps growing
with no rhyme, no reason.
It's fucked up for sure.

You see you start on the job with roadkill.
You know, squirrels, skunks, raccoons,
little animals nobody gives a shit about.
Then you get promoted to family pets.
Fido, Rex, dogs and cats and it starts to suck.
This goes on till your indifference peaks
then they put you on people duty.
In my position I get the little ones,
the elderly, innocents and defenseless.
The ladies and the otherwise weak.
Just the other day I got a  little baby
of six months with a bullet in her skull.

It's to test your emotional latitude.
To make sure you've got the mettle
because people got to go to the other side.
You can't gum up the works with bottlenecks.
No negotiations though they try and sometimes
I wish I could but it gets wired into my soul.
Yeah, underneath these bones there is a soul
but I can't undo what's been deemed to be done.

The one thing that keeps you going is eventually,
once you're a true veteran of the walks,
you'll get a chance to escort the vile.
The real bad fucks of the world.
The Hitlers, Bin Ladens, mass murderers,
those who kill without conscience.
I live for the day I can bring the evil
to the death but till then I got to do
what I got to do and at the end of the day,
I drown my sorrows to forget cause tomorrow's
gonna suck again but mine is a lifetime contract.
