Standing Alone Together

Lacking self-consciousness
she applies her body
to the purpose at hand
showing herself
to her audience
as a picture of awareness
and availability.

Of what is she aware?

She knows that her body
is what it is,
and instead
of being ashamed
or in some way shy
because of it,
she unfolds herself
with the significance of being
whole and inviting

and she trusts him
to understand
that she does not compromise
her sense of self
but rather celebrates it
by sharing who she is
with him
as nakedly
as the human mind
allows.

In what way is she available?

Her physical nature
is outwardly
naked and open
for inspection,
and yet this is not
the most of it,
not at all,

but rather it is
that she herself
stands ready
to share her inner nature,
the seat of her expression
the emotional and spiritual essence
of her most significant reason,

the intimacy of allowing him
to see her vulnerable
and desiring,
unable to hold back
and flowing with the wonder
of just how far she can let go

and that doing so
would reveal her pain
and pleasure
and need
to be loved
unconditionally
and yet knowing
that all of this
may come to nothing,

and so she is at risk
of giving away
her most precious gift,
herself.

And at this,
he cannot help
but to fall to his knees
and beg her to let him
show her
that all that he is
is met in her eyes
and that the mere touch
of her fingers
is the unmasking
of all of his defenses
for he is alone
and naked too
and undone
and free to be
himself in her.
