While he sits and waits and ponders his thoughts,
he thinks about the freedom he once sought.
While he is thinking in his cold and lonely cell,
he wished he were not where he is
which is hell.
When he looks up at the only picture that gave him faith,
he ripped it off the wall and started to shake.
Where was God then,
he was beginning to say,
as he went to the cell window and looked towards the bay.
Where was God when I needed him most,
delivering that poor girls body down at the coast.
Where was God when I was put to trial,
when we knew "guilty" is what the jury would file.
Were You watching when they decided what to do?
When they said "put to death" is that when I knew?
Or maybe when I saw my mother cry,
is that when I knew?
That somehow in reality there is no You!
He began to hit the walls and scream and shout,
then the guards came running to show what they were about,
when they started to beat him raw and to a pulp,
he realized that kicking and screaming would not help.
As they went away to leave him lay in shame
he curled up in a ball and began to blame.
To blame everyone in his life who has wronged him,
even his own mother who showed the Lord to him.
He started to cry,
but began to get up,
he might as well say it so he can give up.
"There is no God!"
Is what he yelled through the halls
as he starts to tremble and then slowly falls.
As he stares down and looks at the floor tile,
"God was there, He was just in stage of denial."
